Stages of the Raker

Below are some examples of the 'stages of the swing’ once you are in the box. Being a good hitter starts well before you step up to the plate. See below to see A-Rod talk about his approach.

In the Hole

Is in the hole the most crucial of steps? Perhaps.

When you are in the hole you should be thinking of:

  • the the pitcher

    • what he has

    • have you faced him before

    • how did he get you out

    • what pitches are working for him today

  • The Scoreboard ‼️

    • what might be asked of you in the situation

On Deck

Start timing the pitcher in your stance - your timing should mimic the hitter at the plate. Is there a man in scoring position?

It is your job to clear the bat and let them know down or up on a play at the plate.

Walking to the Box

You are going to hit a line drive, you are going to lay down the best bunt, you are going to succeed. Those are the thoughts in your head. Find the coach that is giving signals now to connect.

Getting Ready

Do this with purpose. The pitcher throwing 100mph, good for him, he’s about to have his cap spun, you are ready to rake! Look back up at the coach to make sure you have your sign.

Rhythm

Most great hitters have some type of rhythm or movement in their swing prior to Load/Gather. It also helps to keep from squeezing the bat too too hard.

Load/Gather

How is your balance when you load up your back leg?

Stride

How is your balance as you stride toward the pitcher?

Plant

What do you look like when you touch?

Regardless of their hands are when they start or how they load, if you look at pics of Big Leaguers in this stage, they will all look relatively the same.
